BLP Eclipse(TM) 1.1 Release Notes
=======================================================================
Thank you for purchasing the BLP Eclipse. We hope the high quality
output and extensive features of the BLP Eclipse meet your needs and
expectations. Some late-breaking information could not be included in
the printed manual, so we are providing it here.
Please read this file carefully. It contains several important tips
that will make it easier for you to use your BLP Eclipse. You may even
wish to print this document for future reference.
- Notes for the Macintosh® family of computers:
1: When using the LaserWriter Utility (LWU) to rename a printer, the
following rules apply:
a) Printer names must be a minimum of 2 characters and a maximum of 31
characters in length.
b) An unmatched parenthesis will cause renames to fail, even though
LWU reports a successful renaming.
2: For compatibility with the LaserWriter driver, Tabloid and A3
Tabloid paper sizes are included in "Page Setup...", even though the
BLP Eclipse does not support them.
3: When using the Adobe TypeAlign program you must ensure that the
matching ATM font is available on your system for the document that you
are printing.
4: GCC Technologies has included PostScript® Printer Description (PPD)
files that have been written to adhere to versions 3.0 and 4.0 of the
Adobe PostScript® Printer Description file format specification. Please
check your software's documentation to determine which version of the
PPD file format it requires. Both versions of the PPD are within the
"Application Files" folder on the "Printing Software 1" floppy disk,
which is copied to your hard disk during installation; the files based
on version 3.0 of the specification are named "GCECLx2.PPD" (the "x"
represents either "4" or "8", depending on the printer model), while
the version 4.0 PPDs are named "BLP Eclipse x".
In order to use Apple's LaserWriter 8.0 driver or the Adobe Printer
Driver (PSPrinter v8.0), please drag the version 4.0 PPD which
corresponds to the model of your printer from the "Application Files"
folder into the "Printer Descriptions" folder, which is located in the
"Extensions" folder within the "System Folder" on your hard disk. After
selecting the driver icon in the Chooser, select the BLP Eclipse
printer, click on "Setup...", click on "Auto Setup", and click on "OK".
Please refer to the driver documentation for more details.
5: The QuarkXPress PDF files named "BLP Eclipse x.PDF" now support the
new features of QuarkXPress version 3.2 as well as versions 3.1 and
3.11. The files named "3.0 BLP Eclipse x.PDF", which were for use with
QuarkXPress version 3.0, are no longer included.
- Notes for IBM PC/AT/PS2 computers running Windows® 3.1:
1: GCC Technologies has included PostScript® Printer Description (PPD)
files that have been written to adhere to versions 3.0 and 4.0 of the
Adobe PostScript® Printer Description file format specification. Please
check your software's documentation to determine which version of the
PPD file format it requires. The files based on version 3.0 of the
specification are in the directory "A:\" of the BLP Eclipse Windows®
Driver floppy disk, while the version 4.0 PPDs are in the subdirectory
named "A:\PPD_FV40". Aldus PageMaker 5.0 requires the version 4.0 PPDs.
Refer to the instructions at the bottom of page 76 of the BLP Eclipse
User's Manual, and type:
copy a:\ppd_fv40\*.ppd c:\aldus\usenglsh\ppd4
to install the PPD 4.0 files.
2: The BLP Eclipse Windows® Driver floppy disk now includes PDF files
for use with QuarkXPress for Windows®. Refer to the instructions at the
bottom of page 76 of the BLP Eclipse User's Manual, and type:
copy a:\*.pdf c:\xpress
to install the PDF files.
3: On page 76 of the BLP Eclipse User's Manual, the third line from
the bottom should read "Type copy a:\*.pdx c:\aldus\usenglsh\ppds
to install the PDX files."
4: On page 78 of the BLP Eclipse User's Manual, the "User Defined Size"
dialog box is mentioned for compatibility with the standard Windows®
PostScript® driver, even though the BLP Eclipse does not support this
feature. The option has been disabled in the BLP Eclipse Windows® driver.
5: TrueType fonts must be downloaded to the BLP Eclipse printer in
Type 1 format. The Windows® driver downloads TrueType fonts in a manner
that is inconsistent with the TrueType specification and the method
used in the Macintosh® version of the driver. The BLP Eclipse driver
defaults to the correct settings.
6: If you have the 4, 6 or 8 MB RAM configuration of the BLP Eclipse,
you will get improved performance if you increase the value in the
"Virtual Memory (KB)" box located in the "Advanced Options" dialog box
of "Printer Setup". This value increases the threshold at which the
driver clears fonts out of the printer's memory. Increasing the value
will decrease the number of times that a font may be downloaded to the
printer during the course of printing a document. You should use the
following values if the Virtual Memory setting on the printer's front
panel is at the factory setting of Default Memory: if your BLP Eclipse
has 4 MB of RAM, use the value 1550; for a 6MB printer, use 3500; and
for 8 MB, use 5000.
If you have modified your printer's VM setting through the front
panel, the value in the dialog box should be approximately 70% of your
printer's front panel VM setting. For more information, select the
"Help" button in the "Advanced Options" dialog box and select the
underlined "Memory" help topic, and then the "Virtual Memory (KB)"
topic button.
- Notes regarding general printer operation:
1: If you try to print text using a font that the printer does not have
and the application you are using does not download the font to the
printer, the printer will substitute Courier. If the application does
its own kerning, there will be spacing problems. You can avoid the
problem by either using a font resident in the printer or by downloading
the desired font using the LaserWriter Utility.
