SelectPress Process Unit/EP Magazines

Before exchanging SelectPress Process Units (EP Magazines), please refer to this document. Be sure that the transfer wire, charge wire, and laser beam port have been thoroughly cleaned following the instructions in the SelectPress manual.

Any Process Unit (EP Magazine) RMA Request must be accompanied by the following:

  1. Serial # of the SelectPress and the SelectPress Model
  2. Serial # of the Process Unit (EP Magazine)
  3. Page count of the SelectPress
  4. Page count of the Process Unit
  5. Detailed description of the problem
  6. Install date of the Process Unit
  7. Date trouble began
  8. Print Samples (please circle problem on sample & fax copy to Technical Support at (781) 275-1115)
  9. EP Magazine Trouble Report (EPTR)

Bright Spots
Bright Spots are created on the page when the carrier particles meet the drum causing a portion of the drum to charge incorrectly. The Engine specifications allow for a maximum of 5 Bright Spots at a maximum diameter of 1.2 mm per Letter or A4 page.

Excessive Bright Spots (more than 5 per Letter/A4 page):

  • Check paper for moisture from humidity
  • Clean paper feed rollers
  • Clean aligning & paper exit rollers
  • Brush off any excess carrier particles from the copper strip on the Process Unit (EP Magazine)
  • Exchange Process Unit (EP Magazine) only after contacting GCC Tech Support

Leading Edge Jitter Mark
This mark is from the Process Unit (EP Magazine) and is easily remedied. When the Process Unit is inserted in the SelectPress, a metal shaft located inside the SelectPress enters an opening on the Process Unit and "locks" into place. If the Process Unit fails to lock in place correctly, then the Process Unit is held in place by friction, which can lead to a jitter mark at the top of the page.

To help the Process Unit lock into place properly:

  1. Remove the Process Unit from the SelectPress.
  2. Very carefully move (rotate) the green drum a few mm by only touching the RIGHT edge of the drum (the right 5 mm edge). The right side of the drum is the side that goes into the SelectPress last. Be sure not to touch the Auto Toner Sensor Probe on the left side of the Process Unit.
NOTE: BE CAREFUL NOT TO EXPOSE THE DRUM TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT, OR ROOM LIGHT FOR OVER 5 MINUTES. Be careful not to scratch the drum.

Depending on each Process Unit, the distance the Process Unit drum should be rotated can vary from 1 mm to 5 mm. Once the drum has been rotated slightly, reinsert the Process Unit. The jitter mark should be gone. If not, try moving the drum again slightly. This jitter mark usually appears with Process Units that are removed frequently.

Paper Shock
Paper Shock occurs along the trailing edge of the page. As the trailing edge of the paper exits the Aligning Roller prior to passing over the Drum, the tension release of the paper between the fuser roller & the aligning roller causes a black line through gray scale images near the bottom of the page (10-15 mm or 20-30 mm). To avoid paper shock, print on slightly longer paper so that the printable area is outside the paper shock zone.

Vertical White Lines
Vertical white lines (vertical to the paper feed method) can result from a dirty transfer wire or a dirty laser beam port. Be sure to clean the transfer wire and laser beam port thoroughly.

Light Output
Clean the Auto Toner Sensor and the Auto Toner Probe thoroughly. See Tech Bulletin PR013. If cleaning the Auto Toner Sensor thoroughly fails to resolve the problem, try another EP Magazine. If the new EP Magazine works, please contact GCC Tech Support.

Vertical Black Streaked Output
Clean the Charge Wire & the Charge Wire Grid thoroughly. See Tech Bulletin PR012.

Horizontal Banding only on Left & Right sides of page
This may be a defect of the optical unit. Please refer to Tech Bulletin PR015 for more information. If you feel that you have a defective optical unit, please contact GCC Tech Support. Sample output and a completed EP Magazine Trouble Report is required before any RMA's are issued.
