MPF Jams on the Elite XL when Printing Multiple Pages

GCC Technical Support has received numerous reports of jamming on multiple page douments from the Multi-Purpose feeder (also called the manual feed slot or the MPF) on the Elite XL printer family. The symptom of this jamming is that the first page prints completely, but the second page is pulled in slightly and then a paper feed jam is displayed on the front panel of the printer.

Here are the guidelines for installing the correct paper orientation in the Elite XL.

If Letter paper is installed in Tray 1, then the Letter paper installed in the MPF (Multi Purpose Feeder) must match the orientation of the paper in the Tray 1. For example, if Letter Long Edge is in Tray 1, then Letter Long Edge must be installed in the MPF feeder. Otherwise you will experience paper jams when printing from the MPF.

If Tabloid paper is in Tray 1, then Letter Long Edge MUST be installed in the MPF tray if you are printing on letter paper.

To prevent jamming on the Multi-Purpose feeder (MPF), check the following paper orientations:

  1. Paper Tray Paper Orientation in tray
    Tray 1 Letter Long Edge (11 x 8.5)
MPF Letter Short Edge (8.5 x 11) WRONG
    Outcome of #1:
First page of a multiple page document prints from MPF. Second page is pulled into printer slightly; then Paper Jam. Do NOT load paper in this manner.
  2. Paper Tray Paper Orientation in tray
    Tray 1 Letter Long Edge (11 x 8.5)
MPF Letter Long Edge (11 x 8.5) CORRECT
    Outcome of #2:
First page of a multiple page document prints from MPF. Second page prints correctly. No jam occurs.
  3. Paper Tray Paper Orientation in tray
    Tray 1 Tabloid (11 x 17)
MPF Letter Short Edge (8.5 x 11) WRONG
    Outcome of #3:
First page of a multiple page document prints from MPF. Second page is pulled into printer slightly; then Paper Jam. Do NOT load paper in this manner.
  4. Paper Tray Paper Orientation in tray
    Tray 1 Tabloid (11 x 17)
MPF Letter Long Edge (11 x 8.5) CORRECT
    Outcome of #4:
First page of a multiple page document prints from MPF. Second page prints correctly. No jam occurs.
  5. Paper Tray Paper Orientation in tray
    Tray 1 Letter Long Edge (11 x 8.5)
    MPF Tabloid (11 x 17) CORRECT
    Outcome of #5:
First page of a multiple page document prints from MPF. Second page prints correctly. No jam occurs.
  6. Paper Tray Paper Orientation in tray
    Tray 1 Letter Short Edge (8.5 x 11)
    MPF Tabloid (11 x 17) CORRECT
    Outcome of #6:
First page of a multiple page document prints from MPF. Second page prints correctly. No jam occurs.

If you have Tabloid paper in Tray 1 and there are still problems printing from the MPF with Letter Long Edge, the problem could be that the last time letter paper was placed in Tray 1, it was Letter Short Edge and the printer "remembers" that setting. To clear this problem,

  1. Remove the Tabloid paper from Tray 1.
  2. Place a single piece of Letter Long Edge into Tray 1. (Remember to move the Paper Length Guide to the correct position for Letter Long Edge.)
  3. Insert Tray 1 into your printer, and verify that the printer says "Ready" on the front panel.
  4. Wait about 10 seconds, then remove Tray 1 and replace the Letter Long Edge paper with the Tabloid paper.
The printer should now print correctly on Letter Long Edge from the MPF.
