SelectPress Optical Unit Defect

This bulletin is to familiarize you with a possible problem encountered on some SelectPress 600 and 1200 printers. GCC Printers has discovered a small number of printers which exhibited flaws in the optical unit. This defect was detected during tests in our manufacturing facility. It is not known if any previously shipped printers have this anomaly. The defect is generally noticeable only in large solid grey areas. It affects the way dots are drawn near the left & right edges of the paper path, but not the center. If a customer complains of thin, dark and light bands through grey areas, compare their output to the sample below. Grey areas that are even tones near the center of a page (detail A) can gradually change to slightly banded areas near the edges (detail B).

Sample of Banding

NOTE: If the banded area extends all the way across the page, positioned approximately 1-2" from the leading edge, the EP cartridge may not be seated properly. This symptom is distinctly different from those exhibited by a defective optical unit.

Once it has been determined that a problem exists as described on the previous page, contact GCC Dealer Technical Support and request an advance ship RMA for a replacement SelectPress optical housing unit. Reference "Technical Bulletin PR015" and provide the serial number of the printer being repaired when contacting us. GCC will then ship an Optical Housing Unit to you. Upon receipt of the defective optical unit, GCC will credit your account with a $100 labor reimbursement. Samples that illustrate the problem must accompany the returned unit.

Use the instructions below to remove the defective Optical unit. If you have any difficulty with this procedure, please contact GCC Technical Support.

SelectPress Optical Unit removal procedures

Prerequisite Removals: Toner cartridge, EP cartridge, paper exit tray, manual feed guide, paper cassette. Also remove Multi-purpose feeder and Lower Paper Tray Assembly if installed.

Tools: #2 Phillips (medium) screwdriver

  1. Place a protective cushion, such as an anti-static pad, on the work surface.
  2. Place the SelectPress upside-down on the pad.
  3. Remove the three screws (1) and lift up the metal optical unit cover (2).

  4. Remove the three screws (with special springs) (3) and lift the optical unit (4) gently out of the printer.

NOTE: Handle carefully so as to not bend the connector (5) pins. DO NOT touch the laser beam port (slit accross front) (6) to avoid contaminating it with dirt (which can cause distorted print images).

  5. Install the replacement Optical unit in the reverse order of removal.
  6. Reinstall the EP cartridge, toner cartridge, paper cassette, and any options.
This completes the replacement procedure for the optical unit. Turn the printer on and print a sample page to confirm that the replacement is functioning properly. If the problem persists, contact GCC Technical Support.
