Technical Bulletin
SelectPress streaked output
This bulletin is a supplement to the cleaning procedures in the SelectPress User's manual.
These instructions are provided to alleviate the occurance of random vertical streaks and
splotches of toner on pages printed on a SelectPress, as shown in the sample below. Note that
the orientation of the streaks will change depending on the orientation of the paper in the
tray. To clean the main charge wire, follow the directions below, being careful not to touch
the surface of the photo-sensitive drum. If you have any difficulty with this procedure, please
contact GCC Technical support at (781) 276-8620.

- Turn the printer off. Open the top cover and inner cover. Remove the toner and EP
cartridge. DO NOT TOUCH THE SURFACE OF THE GREEN DRUM OR EXPOSE IT TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT.
-
The main charge wire assembly is located on the side of the EP cartridge that points toward
the front of the printer. Grip the right side of the charge wire assembly (silver metal)
and pull it away from the EP cartridge in the direction of arrow (1), while
squeezing together the two black retaining clips (2) in order to release the charge
wire assembly.

- Once the right side is released, slide the charge wire assembly to the left (3) to
disengage it from the retaining pin on the left side.
-
Using the cleaning brush supplied with your printer, gently wipe any toner from the metal
grid on the main charge wire assembly. The grid is located on the side that was facing the
green drum.

-
Turn the main charge wire assembly over and use the felt side of the cleaning tool to clean
the charge wire inside the assembly. Be sure to slide the head of the cleaning tool back
and forth in each of the four openings.

-
Before reinstalling the main charge wire assembly clean the copper contact on the end of
the assembly, using a cloth or alcohol pad.

- Re-attach the charge wire assembly to the EP cartridge, making sure that the left end
fits over the retaining pin. Also be sure the clips on the right side are securely
seated.
-
Before installing the EP cartridge into the printer, the grounding contact for the charge
wire must be cleaned. This contact is positioned in the opening on the right side of the
printer, were the EP is normally installed. This grounding contact is a small metallic pad,
mounted flush with the plastic opening. Wipe this contact with a cloth or alcohol pad.

- Reinstall the EP cartridge and toner cartridge, and close the printer's covers.
This completes the cleaning procedure for the main charge wire. Turn the printer on and
print a few pages to confirm that the cleaning was successful. If the print quality has
improved but some streaks remain, perform the cleaning procedure again. If the problem
persists, contact GCC Technical Support at (781) 276-8620. The main charge wire will need
periodic cleaning as part of the printer's regular maintenance. Perform steps 5, 6, and 8 as
needed. It is a good idea to perform these cleaning procedures whenever you install a new toner
cartridge.
