Sharing the PLP II using System 7.x File Sharing

These are detailed instructions for sharing the PLP II amongst 2-3 Macintoshes.

Here are the minimum requirements for sharing the PLP II:

  1. The Host Mac must have the PLP II attached. The Host Mac must be the faster of the Macs on the network.
  2. The Host Mac must have System Software 7.0 or greater. The Client Macs must have System 6.0.7 or greater.
  3. The Host Mac and all client Macs must have PLP 4.0 or greater installed. The PLP II driver must be selected in the Chooser of each Macintosh.
  4. The Host and Client Macs must all be networked together using Phonenet connectors or LocalTalk Cables.
  5. The network must not be a circle. It must have a beginning and an end.
  6. The PLP II must be turned on and attached to the Host Mac using a Double Shielded, Twisted Pair SCSI Cable.
  7. The internal Clock on the Host Mac should be approximately 1 minute behind the Client Macs.

Instructions

Here is an example of sharing a PLP II amongst 2 Macintoshes.
In this example the Host Mac is Jane's Mac; The Client Mac is Spot's Mac.

Step 1: Sharing Setup

The first step involves turning on Sharing on the Host Mac.
On the Host Macintosh (Jane's Mac):
  1. Go to the Apple Menu.
  2. Select Control Panels.
  3. In Control Panels select Sharing Setup.
  4. In the Sharing Setup, look for File Sharing.
  5. In File Sharing, click on Start. If Stop appears instead of Start, then File Sharing is already turned on. Click Stop if you wish to stop file sharing.
  6. While you are in Sharing Setup, look at the Network Identity. Note the name under Macintosh name; make sure it is the name of the Host Mac such as Jane's Mac in this example.

Step 3: Setting up Host Print File Folder

The next step involves preparing the Host Print File Folder to be shared easily. Also, you will need to set the Preferences on the Host Mac (Jane's Mac) to the current Print File Folder, which we will rename to be "Host Print File Folder" to make the setup easier for the Client Macs.
  1. Move the folder called "Print File Folder" from your Hard Drive to your Desktop on the Host Mac (Jane's Mac). Rename the Print File Folder to "Host Print File Folder". (Do not use the quotation marks in the name). If you are unable to rename this folder, then delete the folder. Create a new folder on the desktop called "Host Print File Folder". (File Menu...New Folder).
  2. Launch GCC Print Manager on the Host Mac (Jane's Mac). The GCC Print Manager is usually on the Hard Drive that contains your System Folder.
  3. Once the GCC Print Manager is running, go to the Special Menu at the top of the screen. (Look for File, Edit, Special.)

Now that your PLP II Print Manager software on the Host is aware of the new name of the Host Print File Folder, it is time to share this folder.
  1. On the Host Mac (Jane's Mac), quit out of the GCC Print Manager if it is open.
  2. Go to the desktop of the Host Mac (Jane's Mac).
  3. Highlight the "Host Print File Folder".
  4. Go to File Menu at the top of the screen. The File Menu is to the right of the Apple menu.
  5. In File Menu, scroll down to Sharing. Let go of the mouse button so that the Sharing window opens. File Sharing must be completely turned ON and active before you can select this option. If you receive an error message that File Sharing is starting up, wait a few minutes and try again.
  6. In the Sharing window, click on the box to the left of "Share this item and its contents" so that an "X" appears in the box.
  7. Make sure the following items have "X" in the box:
Owner: See folders, See Files, Make Changes
User/Group: See Folders, See Files, Make Changes
Everyone: See Folders, See Files, Make Changes
  8. Click on the box to the left of "Make all currently enclosed folders like this one" so that an "X" appears in the box.
  9. Close the Sharing window.

Step 5: Setting up the Chooser and Background Printing

The final step on the Host Mac (Jane's Mac) involves turning on Background printing and verifying that the PLP II driver is selected in the Chooser.
  1. Go to the Apple Menu on the Host Mac (Jane's Mac).
  2. Select Chooser.
  3. Select PLP II on the left side.
  4. "PLP Selected" should appear at the top right (above the box).
  5. Close the Chooser.
  6. Launch GCC Print Manager on the Host Mac (Jane's Mac).
  7. Once the GCC Print Manager is running, go to the Special Menu at the top of the screen. (Look for File, Edit, Special)
  8. Under Special, select Background Printing...
  9. In the Background Printing... window, turn on Background printing by clicking on the On button.
NOTE: You must have the GCC Printing Extension active as an extension before Background printing will work.

    [Figure 15: Background Printing Options]

  10. Click OK to close the Background Printing window.
  11. Quit out of GCC Print Manager.

Step 6: Setting up the Client Mac (Spot's Mac)

The following steps take place on the Client's Mac. In this example, the Client Mac is Spot's Mac.
  1. On the Client Mac (Spot's Mac), go to the Apple Menu.
  2. Select the Chooser.
  3. In the Chooser window, highlight AppleShare in the Left window.
  4. Highlight the Host Mac (in this example the host is called: Jane's Mac) in the Right window.
  5. Hit the OK button.

    [Figure 16: Chooser window]

  6. At the next window, select Guest. If Guest is grayed out, repeat Step #2. You must give Guests the privilege to access this folder in Users and Groups on the Host Mac.
  7. Hit OK.

    [Figure 17: Connect window]

  8. In the next window, you should see "Host Print File Folder" in the list. If this does not appear, repeat Step #3 and Step #4.
  9. Select "Host Print File Folder". If you do not want to repeat this step again, click in box to the right of "Host Print File Folder" so that "X" appears in box. This will cause the "Host Print File Folder" to show up on the Client's desktop every time the Client Macintosh is restarted.

    [Figure 18: Sharing window]

  10. Hit OK.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Host Mac must be turned on and up and running before the Client Mac is started up. Otherwise, the "Host Print File Folder" will not automatically appear on the Client Mac's desktop.

Troubleshooting Tip: Make sure that the Host Mac is turned on before completing Step #6.

The Host Print File folder should now appear on the desktop window of the Client Mac. If the "Host Print File Folder" does not appear, repeat Step #6.

IMPORTANT NOTE: On the Host Mac, the "Host Print File Folder" should now appear as a file server icon. If the Client Mac has successfully logged onto the "Host Print File Folder" then 2 faces will appear in the icon of the "Host Print File Folder" to indicate that users are logged onto this "file server".

[Figure 19: Shared folder icon]

Step 7: Client Mac (Spot's Mac) Setup

The next step involves setting up the Client's Print File Folder to the Host Print File Folder. That way, all print jobs will be sent to the Host over the network where the PLP II is located. Otherwise, the print jobs will be sent to the Client where there is NO PLP II and the print jobs will fail to print.
  1. On the Client Mac (in this example: Spot's Mac), go to the Apple Menu.
  2. Select Chooser.
  3. In the Chooser window, select PLP II on the left side.
  4. "PLP Selected" should appear at the top right (above the box).

    [Figure 20: Chooser window]

  5. Close the Chooser.
  6. Launch GCC Print Manager on the Client's Mac (Spot's Mac). The GCC Print Manager is usually located on the hard drive that contains the System Folder.
  7. Once the GCC Print Manager is running, go to the Special Menu at the top of the screen. (Look for File, Edit, Special.)
  8. Under Special, select Preferences.
  9. In the Preferences window, click on the button "Select Folder..." under the title Current Print File Folder:.
  10. In the "Select Folder..." window, click on Desktop button.
  11. You should see a list of items on your desktop. Scroll down using the scroll bar on the right until you see "Host Print File Folder". If "Host Print File Folder" does not appear, repeat Step # 1-7.
  12. Click on "Host Print File Folder".
  13. Click on "Open" button.
  14. Click on "Current" button. You should now be back at the Preferences window. The current Print File Folder should be "Host Print File Folder". If it is not, repeat steps 1-9.
See the screen shots under Step #3 for pictures of 7-10.

Step 8: Setting up BackGround Printing on Client Mac (Spot's Mac)

If you wish to have background printing on the Client Mac (Spot's Mac) active, follow these steps.
  1. Launch GCC Print Manager on the Client's Mac (Spot's Mac).
  2. Once the GCC Print Manager is running, go to the Special Menu at the top of the screen. (Look for File, Edit, Special)
  3. Under Special, select Preferences.
  4. Under Special, select Background Printing...
  5. In the Background Printing... window, turn on Background printing by clicking on the On button.
NOTE: You must have the GCC Printing Extension active as an extension before Background printing will work.
  6. Click OK to close the Background Printing window.
  7. Quit out of GCC Print Manager.
Screen shots of 2-7 can be found under Step #5.

Step 9: Printing from Client Mac to the Host Mac

Now try to print a job from the Client Mac. If the print job is successful, a spooled file will appear in the "Host Print File Folder" on the Host Mac. If background printing is turned ON on the Host Mac, then the GCC Print Manager will automatically launch and the spooled file will print.

If this does not happen, check the internal clock times on both the Host and the Client Mac. It is usually best to have the Host Mac at least 1 minute behind the Client Mac. Make sure the clocks on all Macs are set at AM or PM (should be matching).

The Host Mac will print the Spooled File once it appears in the Host Print File Folder and its internal clock matches the time at which the file was sent (represented in the name of the Spooled Print File).
